DARUMA-shôten Cats EMBROIDERY TEE
Artwork drawn by the drawing unit "DARUMA-shôten" @dalma.graphic.
The thick, oversized T-shirts are a perfect match for the abundant embroidery.
“Cats have been kept as pets since the Egyptian Kingdom in BC, and were also kept as pets by the Heian aristocracy in Japan.
During the Edo period, it was common for farmers to put up pictures of cats to prevent rats and outsiders coming in. Similarly, they were kept on ships in the Age of Exploration to prevent rats entering the ships.
The Edo period saw Ukiyoe artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi created many pictures of cats.
I feel cats are really interesting to just simply observe.
When they sit, they fit in a box perfectly, and when they stretch, they stretch like rubber. They have a wary look in their eyes or a hundred faces as if they are relaxed or suddenly on their guard. They come in ten different colours and patterns. I wrote this in honour of Utagawa Kuniyoshi whose artwork I respect deeply.”
