ESSU HANTEN

“Yodokabe Hikeshi”: A project by Yodokabe participating artists and HiKESHi SPiRiT to reinterpret the ‘Hanten’ A Hanten redefined in accordance with the “Hanten” code of conduct established by ESSU(@essu_suisugi).
It is reversible, with the front featuring indigo-dyed sashiko fabric as the base, an ESSU icon patch, and a large-scale print on the back.
The reverse side features a design that will take your breath away.

The theme is “The Splendor of Edo.”
When designing this hanten, I focused on the “hanten of that era”—those actually used during the Edo period, which were simple, practical, and possessed a stylized aesthetic. I wanted to express, even if only a little, the aesthetic of “iki”—the refined elegance of the people of Edo who found joy within that minimalist design and style.
So, while the outer fabric is simply rendered in a classic, deep indigo dye, the lining features a startlingly flashy design teeming with supernatural creatures that will take your breath away.
