NAZE HANTEN

“Yodokabe HiKESHi”: A project by Yodogabe participating artists and HiKESHi SPiRiT to reinterpret the ‘Hanten’ A Hanten redefined in accordance with the “Hanten” code of conduct established by NAZE (@naze.989).
Made from heavyweight denim, the design features a “catfish” motif on the large crest and the phrase “Don’t forget what you’ve forgotten” on the waistband, both rendered using laser discharge printing.

The theme for this piece is “Cycle.”
In the past, it was said that earthquakes were caused by catfish, and firefighters would protect people from the fires that followed. I drew inspiration from the imagination of the people of the Edo period.
Since childhood, it was a given that I would visit Kashima Shrine for the first shrine visit of the New Year, so the legend of the “Kariishi” (Key Stone), which pacifies the catfish, was a familiar part of my life.
Fire and water, destruction and regeneration. Just as some things are lost, others are born.
We must not forget the natural cycle that repeats itself as a matter of course. And we must not forget the events that must never be forgotten.
These are the thoughts I have poured into this piece.

-On Designing Within the “Hanten” Format-
First of all, the very existence of the hanten format felt fresh to me. But precisely because of that, I sensed its history and tradition. So, with a sense of taking up that baton, I designed this while considering what I, in turn, could convey today.
