“Musashi Miyamoto”
“Musashi Miyamoto”
This Niten Ichi Ryu collection was created as an homage
to the great swordsman, Musashi Miyamoto.
Since we incorporated his philosophy, thoughts, and quotes into the designs,
it is important for us to talk about who he is and what he is about here.
He was born in Hyogo prefecture, Japan in 1584.
From an early age, he developed his talent with the sword.
An anecdote says that at the age of 13, he challenged
a famous swordsman to a match with a real sword and won.
Apparently, he had over 60 battles since then until around
the age of 30, without losing not even once.
However, not losing in sword battles wouldn’t make him considered
as a legendary swordsman whose stories are passed down to generation after generation.
What we want to focus on here is that Musashi Miyamoto was someone
who has taught and passed on to future generations what “mastering the way “ is.
He self-taught literary arts such as calligraphy, sculpture, painting which his talent was top-notch.
Miyamoto once said: “from one thing, know ten thousand things.”
He stated that when one master one thing, they can apply the experience to other things.
“I have mastered the way of battle.”
He told that he was 50 years old to feel sure about it.
His intention was to lecture about the mindset and techniques
to deal with life’s hardships or turning points in life; not only
about battles where slashing each other with the real swords.
Miyamoto Musashi might be someone who spent his whole
life trying to understand what it means to be born and to live.
Let’s get a closer look at the depth of Miyamoto’s philosophy through “Niten Ichi Ryu,”
a martial art founded by him, and “the Book of Seven Rings,” the masterpiece of battles.

“Niten Ichi Ryu”
“Niten Ichi Ryu”
Niten Ichi Ryu is a Japanese traditional martial art, founded by Musashi Miyamoto in his late years.
It was founded in the Reigandō Cave of Kumamoto city in Japan.
When they hear Miyamoto’s name, the majority of people think about his double-sword technique, “nitoryu.”
He holds ohtachi (a long sword) in his right hand while holding kotachi (a short sword) in his left.
The two swords for this collection's design are our expression of the nitoryu technique.
However, Miyamoto did not always battle with two swards.
Depending on where the battles occur or the capabilities and the number of opponents,
he changed types, length, or how many swards he holds for the battle.
First, organize all the cards (weapons) one has.
Second, sort out the cards one needs.
Finally, ace up one’s sleeve at the right time and take a hold of victory.
It is meaningless to lose in a battle by sticking to the formula
when one is facing serious competition that is life or death.
The reason he remained undefeated even after numerous battles
with real swords throughout his life is because he had the mindset to win anytime.

“心常ニ道ヲ離レズ”
“心、常ニ道ヲ離レズ,” this quote left by Miyamoto translates to “Never stray from the way,”
which he tells the audience to never doubt the way you choose and never abandon it.
An individual who has mastered one path knows all things, and is able to apply the skill to all things.
That’s why we must never leave the path.
Always keep in mind the destination of the path and continue to walk with extreme concentration.
Being exposed to various distractions and temptations, and experiencing ups
and downs in our feelings, are inevitable problems that we must face in life.
Despite being in the midst of those situations, we move forward on the path, even if only one step at a time.
This is a simple yet profound quote from Miyamoto; an elite fighter and
a master of all literary arts who has brought his philosophy to a completion.
We live in a modern world where technology is rapidly changing beyond our knowledge.
We haven’t returned to our ordinary lives as a result of experiencing a worldwide pandemic.
Ideological conflicts are intensified and we have now stepped into war.
How each one of us is going to fight and survive in this world?
The thoughts and philosophies left behind by Musashi Miyamoto sure can give us some hints for this.
