Bujin Matoi
"武人纏"
(Bujin Matoi)
Bujin are not just a brawler,
Bujin are someone who’s ready to battle, like samurai warriors.
What is the true meaning of these words?
In modern times in Japan, we don’t cut each other with swords nor forced to fight on a battlefield.
However, when we’re at a big stage of our lives, we use an expression like “to challenge to a fight.”
What would something that’s always “challenging to a fight” be?
That would be a mindset; the mindset to be ready to battle.
Painting bujin also means drawing out the mind and soul.
Someone who’s challenging burning flames in front of them.
You can say that the hikeshi are also the bujin.

I am Y, the designer of HiKESHi SPiRiT.
I am very ecstatic to finally deliver our works with the bujinga artist, Masayuki Kojo to you.
“These are incredible.”
That was my response when I’d put my hands on the final products for the first time.
This project began right in the middle of the pandemic.
Meetings after meetings,
Fixing after fixing the samples.
The words came from bottom of my heart when we finally made everything work.
Hanten
Koikuchi (carp’s mouth)
T-shirts
We put the souls of Masayuki Kojo’s bujin into these item lineups.
I’m hoping to talk about behind the scene story and our thoughts for each piece on this page.

[SOLD OUT]
“半纏(the Hanten)”
Handing down the style of hanten to the present has been a mission of HiKESHi SPiRiT.
It was obvious to make a hanten for the project with Kojo Sensei.
To be honest, it took forever to release our collaboration work.
Because creating a new style of hanten, that the world has never seen, was such a struggle.
I mean, have you ever seen a hanten like that!?
Look at the slit which starts off from the upper back.
You can see the bujinga by Kojo Sensei peeking under the slit.
We didn’t think it was too smart to print the graphic right on the back.
Bujin appear with the movement of the product.
“Why don’t we also use this artwork for the lining!”
“It would be super awesome if could make the front collar to stand!”
A lot of great ideas popped up during the meetings.
As a designer, I was the one who’s responsible to make the ideas come to life...
Do you think that the design ideas made it to the final products?
Well, what came out from my mouth when I put my hands on them tells it all.

“鯉口 (Koikuchi: Carp Mouth)
Koikuchi* might be seen as the flashy patterned shirts, only worn at the Japanese festivals.
Yet, I’ve always thought that this style is quite versatile; very Japanese, and easy to adopt into our regular lives.
Even then, we haven’t made much of koikuchi at HiKESHi SPiRiT.
The reason?
I couldn’t figure out how to create koikuchi with our unique style.
Something different from patterned koikuchi that’s already out there.
Days go by without making koikuchi happen while keeping the ideas in an idea pocket inside of my head.
But when the project with Kojo sensei started and faced the bujinga artwork for it, I had no doubts.
“Let’s put this artwork onto the koikuchi shirt.”
Not on the back, but largely on the front.
Finally reached the most suitable solution to bring out the intensity of the bujinga artwork and the potential of the canvas, koikuchi.
* 鯉口(Koikuchi: carp mouth), also called Koikuchi shirt, is a style of Japanese shirt. The name refers to the shape of the shirts’ neck, which resembles the mouth of the carps.

“Kojo Sensei”
At HiKESHi SPiRiT, we all call him Kojo sensei (Master Kojo.)
Although we call him that, we don’t have much of age differences.
Even so, Kojo sensei has something we can’t explain with just age, such as the vibe he gives, the strength, and things he talks about.
Kojo sensei looks intimidating at first.
But, after having conversations, looking at his facial expressions, it feels like we’re surrounded by the warm, kind energy.
Hard to determine the age and intimidating.
Yet, he’s a nice person worth calling him a master and honor.
Just like from his bujinga artworks, we feel his strong belief in Kojo sensei.
Both for others and himself.
People cannot be strong without strong beliefs.
Also, they can’t be kind to others.
TEAM KOJO × HiKESHi SPiRiT
“Bujin Matoi”
We hope that by putting on the products birthed from this project, something like “courage” or “belief” forms in you.
